A large number of people go to their local stores buying honey thinking they are paying for the real thing, however, they are often wrong, as the honey found in local stores can oftentimes be a chemically made product, not capable of providing all of the health benefits that the real thing can. That is why, down below we have a few tips and tricks which will help you differentiate the real from the fake one.
- Thumb test
Simply put a little bit of honey on your thumb, and check if it spills or sticks. Real honey tends to stick on your thumb and doesn’t spill.
- Water test
All you have to do is fill a glass of water and add a tablespoon of honey. The real honey will drop to the bottom of the glass while the fake one will dissolve fast.
- Real honey is flammable!
Dip a match in honey before striking it to see if it lights. If the match was dipped in real honey, it would light up easily, but otherwise, it won’t.
Properties of fake honey:
- It foams up
- It is runny and drips
- It has clumps and a rough texture
- It separates into layers
- It has a sour smell or no smell at all
Properties of real honey:
- It doesn’t foam up
- It trickles in a stream and is thick
- It has a soft texture
- It doesn’t separate into layers
- It has a nice aroma of honey
If you’re not able to tell the difference between the two, you can easily fall for an artificial product.
