Monsanto have been garnering unwanted media attention because of the fact that their weedkiller glyphosate is being found in lots their foods, and it is being found in massive amounts.
A FDA-registered food safety lab tested a range of different foods and the pesticide was found to be present in some foods up to 1,000 times more than what is considered the safe amount.
Health implications start to occur when just 0.01 ppb of glyphosate is ingested by humans, but a thousand times more than this was found in certain foods.
Monsanto have tried to say that ingesting this pesticide will not harm your health, but there are lots of reason to believe that this is not the case.
Independent studies have linked glyphosate to cancer, and the World Health Organisation has deemed it as a ‘probably human carcinogen’. It has been linked to reproductive problems, obesity, diabetes, and is thought to be an endocine disruptor.
The chemical is found to be so widespread that it is even being found in foods that are labelled as ‘organic’.
The chemical was found in many common brands like Ritz crackers, Cheerios, Kellogs, Oreo’s.
Monsanto makes billions of pounds every year through the sale of plyphosate based products, and it’s Roundup is the market leader of pesticides. Of course they don’t want any press that will damage their monopoly of the industry.
In 2013 the level of glyphosate that was considered ‘safe’ to be in food was increased by the EPA. You may think they were acting in the interest of public safety, but the EPA has a long history of jumping through hoops for whatever Monsanto wants. The government agencies and industry have been scratching each others backs for hundreds of years, and of course, it is sill happening today.
The FDA are not to be trusted either. After years of avoiding the issue of testing for glyphosate in foods, they announced in February they would begin testing, only for them to suspend the tests, perhaps Monsanto weren’t happy with the results they were turning.
The extent of the problem is breathtaking and it seems that you are at risk of this chemical whatever you buy, but the safest option is to buy from organic market, from people you know and trust.
