One of the most popular sweet-tooth snacks in the world are M&M’s and they are especially popular during the holiday season.

Sadly, they are very harmful for our organism which is why we should definitely try to eliminate them from our diet.

M&M’s were introduced in 1941 and they were specially designed for soldiers because they wanted to bring chocolate with them on their mission without melting it.

The reason why they are named M&M is because the letters are dedicated to the son of the president of Bottom of FormHershey’s – Murrie and for Forrest E. Mars. Thanks to this deal, Mars could use Hershey in all their products.

More than 100 countries have these sweets and they come with more than 30 fillings. Even though the red candies were pulled out from the market 40 years ago, due to some potentially dangerous dies in them, they were allowed again seven years later.

According to the CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest), these colors are neurotoxic chemicals. They also state that every product containing these kind of chemicals should have a label with a warning so that customers can become more aware of the potential risks.

According to Dr. Jacobson, a member of CSPI, these artificial colors have a negative impact on children’s behavior. Unfortunately, a bag of M&M’s contains all of the following ingredients: corn starch, sugar, milk chocolate (chocolate, sugar, skim milk, cocoa butter, lactose, milk fat, salt, soy lecithin, artificial color), less than one percent of corn syrup, gum acacia, artificial colors (Red 40 lake, blue 1 lake, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1, red 40, yellow 6 lake, blue 2 lake, blue 2, yellow 5 lake) and dextrin.

So What Are Some of The Negative Effects That Each of These Ingredients Can Create?

Blue #1 – asthma, allergic reaction, low blood pressure, hives and hay fever are all of the effects of this ingredient. Moreover, it also leads to malignant tumors when ingested by rats. Stay away from this artificial color if you are sensitive to aspirin.

Soy lecithin – More than 90% of soy is GMO which can have negative impact on fertility and reproduction. Moreover, it can also lead to cerebral and behavioral problems.

Red #40 – this artificial color can trigger swelling in and around the mouth, damages DNA and it can also lead to cancer, hives and hyperactivity in kids.

Yellow #6 – Vomiting, allergic reactions, headaches, diarrhea, hyperactivity in children, swelling of the skin, nettle rash and may trigger cancer.

Yellow #5 – May result in allergic reactions and hyperactivity.

Blue #2 –this product is based on petroleum and it can boost hyperactivity in kids, increase brain tumors in laboratory rats and contribute to similar irregular cell developments.

Gum Acacia –is obtained from Acacia tree, it is a dietary fiber and it triggers bloating, nausea and loose stool.

Unfortunately, the popular Mars company is still using all of the abovementioned harmful colors and the worst part is that the FDA has listed them as safe for consumption. People should remember that there are natural and perfectly safe options out there too.

Ten years ago, this company has reached record high income of about $27 million dollars. This means that they can invest some of that money to improve their products. However, in this moment when there are still no improvements, make sure to stay away from these candies. Instead, try consuming more natural alternatives such as:

  • Sweetriot– chocolate bars without GMO ingredients
  • Equal exchange– 100% organic bars and fair trade
  • Good cacao– Tasty dark chocolate bars that come with a myriad of supplements good for our health.
