During the season of holidays, people all over the world eat a lot of chocolate stuff and they worry about gaining weight, when that should be the least important problem.

The consumption of refined sugar in great amounts is linked with the development of tumor, but still, we can’t prove that consuming a lot of sugar can actually be the reason for cancer.

How Sugar Feeds Cancer Cells

The cancer cells can uptake sugar at around 10 to 12 times the rate of all healthy cells. Moreover, Otto Warburg developed a hypothesis which states that in comparison to healthy cells, cancer cells have a different energy metabolism. He also discovered that malignant tumors show raised glycolysis in contrast to the human cells that are healthy.

How Sugar Produces Cancer Cells

According to the results of one vitro study published in the Journal of Clinic Investigation, raised glucose uptake can have positive and direct correlation into the early phases of cancer cell production.

Another 1985 study focused on the risk of a large bowel cancer and sugar and the results showed that people who consumed more sugar were predisposed to develop cancer as opposed to those who did not consumed that much sugar.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the main mechanisms that promote cancer. In fact, sugar burns very differently than the fat and as a result it generates free radicals. Furthermore, these free radicals damage the cell of the mitochondria,  which is why the cell membrane and the nuclear DNA are affected as well and they can cause impairment of the protein.

The genetically mutated cell’s replication causes cancer. In fact, the cells divide and as a result of that, they promote the growth of the tissue which is known as mitosis and once the apoptosis process starts to break down then cancer happens.

Moreover, chronic overeating and obesity can also add to cancer development and growth. Being obese can cause changes in all hormonal levels, including the insulin or sex hormones that raise the risk of developing breast, uterine or colon cancer.

It should also be mentioned that there is a difference between natural sugar and refined sugar which is in fact high fructose corn syrup and it is harmful for our overall health. In order to avoid cancer, make sure to eliminate sodas, baked desserts, processed foods from your diet. On the other hand, natural sugars in all fruits are less harmful, and their glycemic index is not important.

What to Do

The intake of too much sugar can lead to numerous health issues such as: diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, immobility, etc. In order to reduce the risk of developing cancer, make sure to avoid eating refined sugars that come from processed foods and soda. Instead, try to consume the daily recommended amount of veggies and fruits. Try to incorporate more foods that contain iron, fiber and protein in your diet. On the other hand, stop drinking fruit juices that contain added sugar and instead prepare your own natural juices, but use organic fruit.

When it comes to women, they should not consume more than 6 teaspoons or 25 grams of sugar daily (100 calories), while men should not eat more than 9 teaspoons or 37 grams daily (150 calories). Unfortunately, most of the Americans eat more than double of this amount, or around 22 teaspoons on a daily basis.

Hidden sugars: maltose, sucrose, lactose fructose, glucose, and dextrose are types of hidden sugar that can be found on the label for Nutritional Facts label on all products.

Other natural sugars: agave nectar, molasses, maple syrup and honey are natural sugars which are abundant in antioxidants. The antioxidants have the ability to protect you from cancer. However, make sure to eat them in moderation, because they still contain a lot of calories just like other sweeteners.
