Nobel Prize Winner Found A New Way To Prevent Muscle Cramps

Have you ever felt the uncomfortable and painful feeling of a muscle cramp? If so, you’ve probably realized that muscle cramps are not only dangerous when you need train but also in day-to-day situations.

However, the biggest problem is that even many top level athletes experience muscle cramps that—when it counts most—stops them from doing their best in championships.

So, as there were more and more situations when even the best athletes in the world started to fail because of muscle cramps, a Nobel prize winner Rod MacKinnon started to spend more time on researching about muscle cramps and how to prevent them.

As a Nobel prize winner and well-known molecular neurobiology, biophysics specialist, and a passionate kayaker, MacKinnon said: “The primary origin of the cramps is the nerve, not the muscle.” It’s one of the first and the most important things that MacKinnon realized before started to go deeper into his research.

By using himself as a lab rat, MacKinnon began drinking spicy drinks with varying amounts of ginger and cinnamon, because he believed that it may help to reduce the muscle cramps by helping to regulate electrical impulses. After almost a decade of experimenting, he was sure that spicy drinks stop muscle cramps.

Yet, athletes have begun using various methods to stop muscle cramps some time ago. Some of these methods involve drinking lots of water, beet and pickle juice, and eating cherries and bananas. All of these methods are still popular because it’s believed that pickle juice has lots of sodium that replaces electrolytes, while beet and cherry juice provide lots of antioxidants.

Dr. Skiba, one of the scientists who concentrates on muscle cramps, said that he noticed more and more athletes who drink spicy drinks instead of juices. So, if even the greatest athletes choose spicy drinks instead of juices, it’s safe to say that spicy drinks work and maybe are even better than the juices.
