Your smile says a lot about you – people learn a lot from you by your smile. They get a feel for how warm and caring you are, what your sense of humor is, and unfortunately, if you drink a lot of coffee or smoke cigarettes. Our teeth naturally wear down over time, and it’s hard to keep them white. Fortunately, there are some interesting natural remedies for whitening teeth that actually work. No expensive dentist trips here!
1. Activated charcoal
Activated charcoal is similar to what you use in your grill, but it’s reheated and oxidized – perfectly safe to ingest. When applied to the teeth, it binds to stains caused by coffee, plaque, and cigarettes, and removes them. Do not brush with activated charcoal daily. It is incredibly abrasive. Once a week at most will do, and instead of brushing, just dab it onto your teeth.
2. Banana peels
Okay, it’s pretty weird, but you can totally replace your expensive whitening strips with banana peels. Banana peels contain loads of potassium, magnesium, and magnesium which all remove stains from your teeth. Select a ripe banana, cut a rectangle out of the peel, and rub the peel on your teeth for 2 minutes once a week. Wait an hour then brush like usual.
Turmeric is great for just about everything, including whitening your teeth. Turmeric has natural astringent properties, which helps tighten gums and remove plaque from the teeth. It has the same abrasiveness as activated charcoal, so it helps scrub the plaque from your teeth.
4. Apple cider vinegar
ACV is perfect for oral hygiene in general. It’s loaded with antibacterial properties, which helps prevent the buildup of plaque on your teeth in the first place. Mix 1 part ACV and 2 parts water and rinse each morning.
5. Hydrogen peroxide
HP works like a charm, but it comes with a warning. Do not swallow it and only use it once or twice a week. HP works great at reducing bacteria in the mouth and getting rid of surface stains on the teeth. Mix 1 part HP with 2 parts water. Never rinse with it at full strength.
6. Coconut oil
What can’t coconut oil do? Among its many uses is as an antibacterial agent. Coconut oil has been repeatedly proven to reduce gingivitis and plaque caused by bacteria, which helps lead to a brighter smile and healthier mouth. Simply swish a little cold pressed coconut oil around in your mouth for 5 minutes once a day. I usually do it at night before bed.
