Now that the World Health Organization has confirmed that certain processed meats are cancerous and full of toxins and chemicals it’s good to know how we can avoid them and make the right choice. Processed meat refers to meat that has been treated in some way to preserve or flavor it. Processes include salting, curing, fermenting, and smoking. We’re going to share with you a few useful tips and advices from Veterinarian MDs which will help you make a more informed decision regarding what kind of meat to buy.
Cured, processed and semi-processed meat products
The most important thing you need to look out for is the declaration of origin. If the label on sausages hot-dogs or salami says MSM you better not buy them. This means that the meat has been grinded in a machine along with the bones, which is the main body part where all the antibiotics, hormones, heavy metals and other toxins the animal has been exposed to are stored.
The same goes when you see additives, nitrites marked E249, E25, E251 and E252. They can be dangerous for you because they react to the amino acids in the meat creating a cancerous compound – nitrosamine. Another thing you need to look out for in the label is polyphosphates like E451, E452 and E453, if any of these compound is listed on the label you should put the product back to the shelf immediately. According to experts they are Geno-toxic, meaning they can cause damage our genomes.
It’s especially important to avoid products which contain E407 because this compound can stick to the intestinal walls creating sores which can later develop into colon cancer. You should also avoid flavor enhancers like glutaminates. Their presence usually indicates the absence of meat in the products.
When buying fresh meat you should look for thin white streaks of fatty tissue. If the meat has these streaks they’re proof that the animal has been well kept and fed. If it’s just meat, no white streak in sight, and water is leaking from it, the animal has probably been fed growth hormones and antibiotics.
When you’re preparing fresh meat you need to be careful not to burn it. The burned part of the meat can become cancerous because there’s a chance for a compound called dioxin to appear. It’s best to steam or boil the meat, to bake it in aluminum foil or you can grill it as well. If you grill it make sure to put the meat on the grill once the charcoal stops smoking and the flame reduces.
